Part 1
THE OUT is Jaguar Land Rover's own app-based car hire service, and as of July 2026 it is worth booking only if you were already paying premium-hire rates: it publishes no rate card and quotes in-app. Referral code CI311 takes £50 off a first booking.
The service launched on 8 April 2019, built by JLR's InMotion Ventures arm. Vehicles (typically Range Rovers, Defenders, and Jaguar F-Paces) are delivered to your door anywhere in the UK: free in London (Zones 1–5), select airports and Greater Birmingham, and for a fee elsewhere, Manchester included. The refer-a-friend programme gives both sides £50: new customers save £50 on their first booking by entering CI311 at checkout in the app, and the referrer receives £50 in THE OUT account credit as soon as that booking is made (terms as verified on theout.com/refer in July 2026).

Part 2
THE OUT is a premium app-based car rental service operated by Jaguar Land Rover's InMotion Ventures arm. Launched in London in April 2019, it now delivers vehicles UK-wide, free in London (Zones 1–5), select airports and Greater Birmingham, and for a fee elsewhere. The fleet is exclusively Jaguar and Land Rover models, including Range Rover Sport, Velar, Defender, and Jaguar F-Pace.
The launch announcement (opens in new tab) is JLR's own, and InMotion Ventures is its venture capital and shared-mobility arm rather than a rental subsidiary. The operating company is InMotion Ventures 3 Limited (opens in new tab), UK company number 10445040.
Booking is app-first, iOS or web, and the driver's licence is uploaded once and reused for every rental after that. THE OUT is rated 4.8 / 5 on Trustpilot (opens in new tab) from over 1,800 reviews.
THE OUT publishes no rate card. Every booking is quoted in the app for your vehicle, dates and delivery address, and none of its public vehicle pages carry a price (checked July 2026). The only pricing JLR has ever published is the 2019 launch rate: £195 for the first day, £100 per day after that, from £295 for a weekend. The cheapest way in is a refer-a-friend code, since THE OUT runs no public voucher codes: CI311 takes £50 off a first booking.
Prices move with model and with demand, so treat any daily figure you see quoted elsewhere as an estimate rather than the price you will be shown.
The launch pricing (opens in new tab) applied to a Discovery Sport and is seven years old, but it fixes the shape of the pricing: a high first day, a lower per-day rate the longer you keep the car, and a premium tier well above mainstream hire.
What the price already covers (per theout.com, July 2026), which is where the comparison with a cheaper headline rate gets interesting:
At a traditional rental desk, insurance excess reduction, an additional driver and a child seat alone can add £20–£60 a day, so the like-for-like gap is narrower than the headline rates suggest. It does not close, though. THE OUT is the premium option.
Three levers beyond the referral code:
One eligibility note: THE OUT states that many of its vehicles are available to drivers over 25, so check the age requirement on the model you want before you plan around it.
Download THE OUT app, create your account, and enter referral code CI311 at checkout when making your first booking. £50 comes off your booking total automatically, and the referrer receives £50 in THE OUT account credit as soon as you book. There is no cap on referrals.
The link on this page goes to theout.com/refer (opens in new tab), and the app comes from the iOS App Store. Account creation includes a verification step, a driver's licence upload and an identity check, which has to clear before you can book anything.
The discount applies to your first booking only. Subsequent bookings revert to standard pricing, so the code is worth one use and no more.
THE OUT suits people already planning a premium rental: weekend road trips, family weekends away, special occasions, or executives who want an app-first alternative to airport rental desks. The £50 discount is meaningful, but it does not change the underlying price point: daily rates sit well above mainstream rentals.
THE OUT is designed for a specific kind of customer rather than the everyday hire market: the trip where the car is part of the point. Range Rovers and Defenders for a country weekend, a wedding or an anniversary, delivered to your door instead of collected from an airport queue. Child seats, bike racks and EU travel insurance come bundled rather than upsold at a desk, and there is no desk, no key-collection queue and no upsell ritual, because the whole thing runs through the app.
Not a fit for: routine economy rentals, strictly cost-conscious hire, or trips where the car is purely functional. £50 off a £200+ booking does not bring THE OUT into Enterprise- or Sixt-economy territory, and if price is the only deciding factor a traditional rental will still come in cheaper.
THE OUT is more expensive than mainstream rentals like Sixt, Enterprise, or Hertz, but it bundles delivery, collection, insurance, additional drivers, child seats, and EU travel cover into the headline price. Traditional rentals usually charge for those extras at the desk. THE OUT's fleet is also limited to JLR vehicles rather than a multi-brand inventory.
