Switching supplier is handled entirely by the company you are joining: you don't contact your old provider, and your supply is never interrupted. Most switches complete within 2-3 weeks. All three suppliers here pay £50 for a refer-a-friend switch, so the reward is not what separates them. Fit is. Octopus Energy is where I've been a customer since September 2019, for gas since July 2026 when my electricity moved to EDF, holds Which? Recommended Provider for nine consecutive years, and runs the deepest smart-tariff range in the UK market, which is what matters if you have an EV, solar or a heat pump. EDF's Simply Tracker prices the unit rate at the Ofgem cap and takes a flat 6.85p a day per fuel off the standing charge, so it suits a low-usage home coming off a variable tariff or sitting on the cap, and it cannot beat a fixed tariff priced below the cap unit rate. E.ON Next pays its £50 as a retail voucher rather than bill credit, runs Next Drive at 9p/kWh overnight for EV owners, and is the only scheme on this site proven to pay a referrer whose own account has lapsed: it paid me twice in July 2026.
Best UK energy deals in 2026
The best energy deal is the cheapest tariff for your actual usage, and that depends on your home and habits, so for raw price comparison a switching site like Uswitch is the place to start. One thing it won't tell you: a comparison quotes you against the Ofgem price cap, not against the fixed tariff you may already be on, and those are different questions with different answers. What a referral adds is a flat £50 (£75 for an Octopus business switch) on top of whatever tariff you pick, as bill credit at Octopus Energy and EDF or a retail voucher at E.ON Next. None of the three runs public discount codes, so the refer-a-friend reward is the only sign-up saving available.

What are the best UK energy deals in 2026?
For the suppliers we cover, the deal is the refer-a-friend reward: £50 in bill credit with Octopus Energy or EDF, or a £50 retail voucher with E.ON Next, paid on top of whatever tariff you choose. None of them runs public discount or voucher codes, so this is the only sign-up saving. For the cheapest rates, compare tariffs on a switching site first, check the quote against the tariff you are actually on rather than against the price cap, then use a referral link to claim the credit.
