E.ON Next's refer-a-friend scheme pays both the new customer and the referrer a £50 voucher to spend at retailers like M&S, Sainsbury's, Argos, and Ticketmaster, landing once the new customer's supply is live and their first direct debit has cleared, which E.ON says is usually within four weeks of starting the switch. I landed on E.ON Next when my old supplier Bulb collapsed in late 2021 and stayed for the prices, the app, and a referral scheme that's always paid out cleanly when I've sent friends their way.

Why this rating
The same shape as the Octopus scheme with one advantage that matters more than it sounds: it pays in a retail voucher rather than bill credit, so the money leaves the energy account. E.ON Next also paid me twice as a referrer after my account had lapsed, which most schemes quietly stop doing.

Renewable electricity is not standard: the fuel mix disclosure (opens in new tab) puts the electricity E.ON Next supplied from April 2025 to March 2026 at 27.3% renewable and 53.2% natural gas, against a UK average of 48% renewable. The 100% figure now belongs only to Next Pumped (opens in new tab): Next Gust, the wind-backed fixed tariff that also carried it, has left the tariff list. E.ON Next's case is that its tariffs are legible: a fixed rate or one that follows the Ofgem cap, with one of Europe's largest energy companies behind the meter. Both are 12-month fixes with no exit fee, and both require a smart meter.

Next Drive has a fixed window, so the car has to be set to charge inside it, and the other 18 hours are billed at a peak rate E.ON sets 8.55p/kWh above its standard rate in every region, which is what everything else the house uses outside the window costs.
Next Drive Smart needs a compatible EV charged through the E.ON Next Home app, and is cheaper at both times of day: 6.5p/kWh overnight, and a peak 7.72p above the standard rate rather than 8.55p. E.ON's £476 assumes 8,000 miles a year at 3.33 miles per kWh, against the 26.322p standard rate.
E.ON Next also offers a charger + tariff bundle for customers who need a home charger installed.
