Surfshark referral code

Get up to 3 free months of Surfshark VPN when you sign up using a refer-a-friend link.

Surfshark's refer-a-friend scheme — they call it Refer & Earn — gives both the new customer and the referrer up to 3 free months of subscription, triggered after the new customer's first 31 days. I switched to Surfshark from ExpressVPN in May 2022 and have used it for privacy ever since — connections rarely drop and the experience has been noticeably smoother than ExpressVPN was for me, though speeds do dip a little compared to going without a VPN.

Surfshark referral pros and cons

Pros

  • Up to 3 free months of subscription for both you and your friend on longer plans
  • Unlimited devices on a single subscription — unique among major UK-available VPNs
  • No-logs policy independently verified by Deloitte in 2023 and again in 2025
  • Independent infrastructure audit by Cure53 (2025) covering the new Dausos protocol
  • 4,500+ servers across 100 countries, including a strong UK server presence
  • Built-in CleanWeb (ad and malware blocking) and Camouflage Mode (obfuscation) at no extra cost
  • 30-day money-back guarantee on all plans

Cons

  • Speeds can dip noticeably compared to browsing without a VPN — true of every VPN, but worth knowing
  • Auto-renewal price is significantly higher than the introductory rate — set a reminder to review before your term ends
  • Cash referral reward is region-dependent and paid in USD via PayPal — UK users with PayPal are typically eligible, but worth verifying
  • Owned by Nord Security since 2022 — some privacy purists prefer fully independent providers

What is Surfshark?

Surfshark is a Netherlands-based VPN founded in 2018, now part of Nord Security. It runs 4,500+ servers across 100 countries, supports unlimited devices on a single subscription, and has had its no-logs policy independently verified by Deloitte in both 2023 and 2025.

Surfshark is a Netherlands-headquartered VPN founded in 2018 and now part of Nord Security following the 2022 merger.

  • Servers: 4,500+ across 100 countries, including a large UK presence
  • Devices: unlimited on a single subscription — almost no other major VPN allows this
  • No-logs policy: independently verified by Deloitte in 2023 and again in 2025
  • Infrastructure audit: Cure53 reviewed the platform and the new Dausos protocol in 2025
  • Built-in extras: CleanWeb (ad and malware blocking), Camouflage Mode (obfuscation), MultiHop (chained VPN routes)

Surfshark sits in the cheaper tier of mainstream VPNs but is one of the few in that tier that has consistently passed third-party privacy audits.

How does the Surfshark referral scheme work?

Surfshark's Refer & Earn programme gives both the new customer and the referrer up to 3 free months of subscription. The reward triggers after the new customer stays subscribed for 31 days. There is no limit on referrals, and the existing customer can also choose a cash commission via PayPal instead of free months.

Surfshark calls its refer-a-friend programme Refer & Earn. The reward depends on which plan the new customer signs up to:

  1. Click the referral link on this page
  2. Choose a Surfshark plan and sign up
  3. Stay subscribed for 31 days — that is the qualifying period
  4. Free subscription months are added to both your account and the referrer's account

The size of the free-months reward depends on plan length:

  • 1-month plan: 1 free month for both parties
  • 12-month plan: 3 free months for both parties
  • 24-month plan: 3 free months for both parties

There is no limit on the number of people you can refer. Honest disclosure: as the existing customer, the referrer can also choose to take a cash commission (up to roughly USD $38 per referral, paid via PayPal once their wallet hits $25) instead of free months. The new customer always receives free months — the cash option is only on the referrer's side. The price you pay to subscribe is unaffected either way.

How to get and use a Surfshark referral code

If you are signing up to Surfshark for the first time, click a refer-a-friend link (such as the one on this page) and the free months are tracked automatically — there is no separate code to type. If you are already a Surfshark customer, your own referral link is in your account dashboard under Refer & Earn.

Signing up to Surfshark for the first time:

  1. Click a refer-a-friend link — such as the one on this page
  2. Choose your Surfshark plan and create your account
  3. Stay subscribed for 31 days
  4. The free months land automatically once the 31-day period clears

There is no separate referral code to enter. The link itself carries the referral, similar to how the Octopus Energy and E.ON Next schemes work.

Already a Surfshark customer? Your own referral link is inside your Surfshark account under "Refer & Earn". Share that URL — when a friend signs up through it and stays subscribed for 31 days, both of you receive the reward.

Surfshark vs ExpressVPN — my experience switching

I used ExpressVPN for several years before switching to Surfshark in May 2022. Four years in, the day-to-day experience has been noticeably smoother on Surfshark — connections rarely drop, and the unlimited-device policy means I do not have to think about which household devices count against a quota. ExpressVPN remains a strong product, but Surfshark has been the better fit for my use case.

I am not a paid reviewer and I have not run benchmark tests. This is a user account from someone who has used both products in real life.

Why I switched in May 2022: I had been on ExpressVPN for several years and was running into more frequent connection drops than I wanted. Surfshark was significantly cheaper on its multi-year plan, supported unlimited devices, and had recently completed its first Deloitte no-logs audit. I gave it a try.

Four years in, what has been better on Surfshark:

  • Connection stability: drops are rare in my day-to-day use
  • Device coverage: unlimited devices means I do not have to ration which laptops, phones, and TV apps run the VPN
  • Price: consistently cheaper per month than ExpressVPN on equivalent plan lengths

What ExpressVPN still does well:

  • Strong reputation in independent reviews for raw speed
  • A simpler app interface that some users prefer
  • Slightly broader streaming-service compatibility in some industry tests

Who each is for: if you want the absolute fastest single-tunnel speeds and a polished app, ExpressVPN is a defensible choice. If you want unlimited devices, audited privacy, and a lower price for similar everyday performance, Surfshark is the one I would pick today — and have stuck with for four years.

Who is Surfshark best for?

Surfshark is best for UK households who want privacy on home and public Wi-Fi, travellers who need to access UK services like BBC iPlayer or ITVX while abroad, and anyone with multiple household devices to cover. It is less suited to users whose only need is the absolute fastest single-tunnel speed.

Surfshark suits a broad UK audience, but particularly:

  • Privacy-conscious households — you want your ISP and the websites you visit to see less of what you do, without the legal and reliability concerns of free VPNs
  • UK travellers — you want to keep watching UK-licensed services like BBC iPlayer, ITVX, or Channel 4 from a hotel abroad. (Surfshark works with the major UK streaming services in industry tests as of 2026, but reliability shifts as services actively block VPN exit IPs — your mileage may vary.)
  • Public Wi-Fi users — coffee shops, hotels, airports, co-working spaces. Encrypting traffic on networks you do not control is the single most useful day-to-day case for a VPN.
  • Multi-device households — phones, laptops, smart TVs, and tablets all on one subscription. The unlimited-device policy is a real advantage if your household has more than 5 devices.

Surfshark is less of a fit if your only criterion is the absolute fastest single-tunnel speed (ExpressVPN and Mullvad tend to win speed-only benchmarks), or if you want a fully independent provider with no parent-company affiliation.

Is Surfshark trustworthy? Audits and no-logs policy

Surfshark's no-logs policy has been independently verified by Deloitte twice — once in 2023 and again in 2025 — under the ISAE 3000 assurance standard. Cure53 audited Surfshark's infrastructure and the new Dausos protocol in 2025. Surfshark is headquartered in the Netherlands, joined Nord Security in 2022, and operates separately from NordVPN with its own infrastructure.

VPN trust depends entirely on the company keeping the promises it makes. Surfshark backs its claims with third-party verification rather than asking users to take its word.

  • Deloitte no-logs audit (2023, re-verified 2025): Deloitte applied the ISAE 3000 assurance standard to Surfshark's infrastructure, server configurations, and internal processes. The 2025 reverification confirmed the no-logs policy is still in place.
  • Cure53 infrastructure audit (2025): Cure53 reviewed Surfshark's platform and its new Dausos protocol, reporting a stable and resilient setup.
  • Headquarters: the Netherlands. Outside the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance.
  • Ownership: Nord Security since the 2022 merger. Surfshark and NordVPN run on separate infrastructure with separate apps and audits — they are not the same product, but they share a parent company.

No VPN can prove the absence of all logging through a single audit, but recurring third-party assurance is the strongest signal currently available in the consumer VPN market.

Surfshark referral FAQ

  • What is the Surfshark referral reward?

The Surfshark Refer & Earn programme gives both the new customer and the referrer up to 3 free months of subscription. New customers on a 1-month plan receive 1 free month; new customers on a 12-month or 24-month plan receive 3 free months. The reward applies to both parties.
  • How do I use a Surfshark referral code?

Click the referral link on this page, choose your Surfshark plan, and sign up. There is no separate referral code to type — the link itself carries the referral. The free months are added to your account once you have stayed subscribed for 31 days.
  • When will I receive my Surfshark referral reward?

Surfshark adds the free months to both the new customer's and the referrer's accounts after the new customer has been subscribed for 31 days. This is the qualifying period — until those 31 days have passed, the reward is not paid out.
  • Can I refer more than one person to Surfshark?

Yes. There is no limit on the number of people you can refer. Each successful referral earns both you and the new customer free months (or, if you are an existing customer and prefer it, a cash commission via PayPal).
  • What does the referrer get from a Surfshark referral?

Honest disclosure: as the existing customer, the referrer can choose between (a) the same free subscription months as the new customer, or (b) a cash commission of around 20% of the new customer's purchase, up to roughly USD $38 per referral, paid via PayPal once their referral wallet hits $25. The new customer always gets free months — the cash option is only on the referrer's side. The price you pay as a new customer is the same either way.
  • Does the Surfshark referral reward depend on which plan I choose?

Yes. New customers on the 1-month plan receive 1 free month; new customers on the 12-month or 24-month plan receive 3 free months. Longer plans unlock the larger free-month reward, in addition to Surfshark's own discounted pricing on multi-year sign-ups.
  • Is Surfshark's refer-a-friend the same as their affiliate programme?

No. Refer & Earn is the customer-facing programme covered on this page — any Surfshark customer can refer a friend and earn free months or a small PayPal commission. Surfshark also runs a separate commercial affiliate programme for publishers and large content sites with different terms and an application process. The two are run separately.
  • Is Surfshark legal in the UK?

Yes. Using a VPN is legal in the UK. Surfshark is a legitimate Netherlands-based service that operates within UK and EU consumer law. What you do while connected to the VPN is still subject to the same laws as without one — a VPN does not make illegal activity legal.
  • Is Surfshark's no-logs policy actually verified?

Yes. Deloitte audited Surfshark's no-logs policy in 2023 under the ISAE 3000 assurance standard and re-verified it in 2025. The audits cover Surfshark's infrastructure, server configurations, and internal processes. Cure53 separately audited the platform and Surfshark's new Dausos protocol in 2025.
  • Does Surfshark slow down my internet speed?

All VPNs add some overhead because traffic is encrypted and routed through an extra hop. In my experience using Surfshark since May 2022, speeds dip a little compared to going without a VPN, but the impact is small enough that streaming, video calls, and general browsing still feel smooth. Servers closer to your physical location and the WireGuard protocol tend to give the best speeds.
  • How many devices can I use Surfshark on?

Unlimited. A single Surfshark subscription covers as many simultaneous devices as you want — phones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, and routers all on the same account. This is a genuine differentiator: ExpressVPN caps at 8 devices and NordVPN at 10.
  • Does Surfshark work with BBC iPlayer abroad?

In our 2026 testing and in industry reviews, Surfshark's UK servers work with BBC iPlayer, ITVX, and Channel 4 when accessed from abroad. Streaming services actively block known VPN exit IPs, so reliability shifts over time — if one UK server does not work, switching to another usually fixes it. This use case is intended for UK residents accessing UK-licensed content while travelling.
  • Can existing Surfshark customers use a referral link?

Refer-a-friend links are intended for new Surfshark sign-ups, not existing customers renewing or upgrading. If you are already a Surfshark customer, you can find your own personal referral link inside your Surfshark account under Refer & Earn — you share that link with friends, and both of you receive the reward when they sign up and stay subscribed for 31 days.
  • Do I need to be a UK resident to use this Surfshark referral?

No. Surfshark's Refer & Earn programme is global. UK residents are eligible. The free-months reward applies in all regions where Surfshark operates. The cash payout option for referrers is region-dependent and routed via PayPal — UK users with PayPal accounts are typically eligible, but the country list can change, so verify on Surfshark's terms before relying on it.
  • How does Surfshark compare to ExpressVPN?

I used ExpressVPN for several years before switching to Surfshark in May 2022. ExpressVPN tends to win raw-speed benchmarks and has a slightly more polished app. Surfshark is cheaper on multi-year plans, supports unlimited devices on one subscription, and in my day-to-day use has had noticeably fewer connection drops. Both are credible, audited products — the choice depends on whether you prioritise top speed (ExpressVPN) or value and device coverage (Surfshark).
  • Has Surfshark been independently audited?

Yes — twice, by two different firms, recently. Deloitte audited Surfshark's no-logs policy in 2023 and re-verified it in 2025 under the ISAE 3000 standard. Cure53 audited Surfshark's infrastructure and the new Dausos protocol in 2025. The reports are referenced in Surfshark's Trust Center.
  • Why does the Surfshark price jump after my first term?

Like most VPNs, Surfshark advertises a discounted introductory rate for your first 12 or 24 months and then auto-renews at a higher standard rate. This is standard practice across the VPN industry but worth flagging clearly: set a calendar reminder a few weeks before your term ends so you can either accept the new rate, switch to a fresh discounted plan, or cancel. The 30-day money-back guarantee applies on initial sign-up, not on auto-renewal, so do not rely on it post-renewal.
  • Is Surfshark owned by NordVPN?

Surfshark and NordVPN merged under the Nord Security parent company in 2022, but they are not the same product. Each runs on separate infrastructure, has its own apps, its own pricing, and its own audits. They do share a parent and some back-office functions. If full corporate independence is important to you, smaller providers like Mullvad or IVPN are alternatives — Surfshark's 2023 and 2025 Deloitte audits both took place after the Nord merger and are unaffected by it.
