Surfshark vs NordVPN: is the cheaper Nord-owned sibling worth it?

Short answer: these are one company's two VPNs, so the choice is between products rather than between providers. NordVPN wins on network size (its own API listed 8,763 servers across 149 countries when I queried it on 6 August 2026, against Surfshark's published 4,500+ across 100) and on speed, and if security is the single thing you are buying on, my honest read in 2026 is that Nord has the edge. Surfshark wins on devices, where it is unlimited and Nord caps at 10, on ease of use, and on price tier. I have paid for both, seven years apart, and Surfshark is the one I still pay for.

I have paid for both, seven years apart

Two receipts, and the dates on them are load-bearing.

NordVPN: £60 on 3 May 2018, for a two-year subscription. About £2.50 a month. It was my first VPN and I stayed on it until around 2020.

Surfshark: £48.28 on 1 August 2025, for 27 months. About £1.79 a month, running to roughly November 2027, and a campaign price rather than a standard rate. It was not my first Surfshark term either. I have been a customer since May 2022, so that payment is a further term bought three years in, by someone who already knew what the product does.

Set those two figures beside each other and there is an obvious temptation to subtract one from the other. Don't. They are seven years apart, they are different kinds of purchase, and neither is today's price for either product. Both companies run near-permanent percentage-off campaigns, so the live rate is whatever each site happens to be showing this week: surfshark.com (opens in new tab) and nordvpn.com (opens in new tab) are the only sources for that, and no site including this one issues a coupon that beats them. What the receipts do establish is that both products have taken real money off me, which is more than most pages comparing the two can say.

What NordVPN was like when I used it, 2018 to 2020

When I used Nord, between 2018 and 2020, it dropped connections often. Often enough that it is the thing I remember about the product, ahead of anything it did well.

The drops were not why I left, though. I moved to ExpressVPN around 2020 because Express was cheaper than Nord at the time and I found it a slightly nicer piece of software to use day to day. Both halves of that sentence would surprise someone shopping in 2026, when Express sits at the premium end of the market and Nord does not.

Express then developed the same connection problem in my account, which is what took me to Surfshark in May 2022. Two providers dropping connections in one household is worth naming as a limit on the evidence rather than a verdict on either company: my flat, my router and my ISP were in the path both times.

Here is the part a page written to sell you Surfshark would leave out. The Nord I left in 2020 is not the Nord you would buy in 2026. Six years is a long time in this market, and the fault I hit is not one I would expect a buyer to hit today. Everything below this line is about the current products, not the one I cancelled.

The ownership point most of these comparisons skip

Surfshark joined Nord Security in 2022 (opens in new tab). NordVPN is a Nord Security company as well. "Surfshark vs NordVPN" is therefore two products under one parent, and that does two things to the decision.

First, it kills the backup argument. Buying one as a hedge against the other failing, being breached, or changing its policy is not the hedge it looks like, because the same company sets policy for both. If corporate independence is genuinely your criterion, it rules out this entire comparison, and the usual picks are Mullvad and IVPN.

Second, it does not make them the same product. They run on separate infrastructure with separate apps, separate pricing and separate audits. Surfshark's Deloitte no-logs audits in 2023 and 2025 both happened after the merger, under a firm with its own reputation to protect. The audit history and who verified what is in the reviewer round-up.

So as a tiebreaker between these two specifically, the shared parent is a wash. It is a real fact about both, it is the fact most comparison pages get wrong or omit, and it decides nothing between them.

Where NordVPN wins

The network. NordVPN's own API listed 8,763 servers across 149 countries when I queried it on 6 August 2026, including 1,059 in the UK. Surfshark publishes 4,500+ servers across 100 countries, a figure last checked here on 9 May 2026. Both numbers are each company's own count and both move daily, so the honest read is roughly two to one on servers and about 50 more countries on Nord's side, not a precise gap. Country coverage is the half that changes what you can do: more countries means more places you can be and still connect to something close by.

Speed. Nord is the faster of the two, and I want to be exact about what that rests on. I have not benchmarked either product and my two accounts sit seven years apart, so it is my read rather than a measurement I ran. What is measured is where Surfshark sits: independent benchmarks put it at 70 to 90% of unprotected connection speeds on nearby servers, which is mid-pack rather than class-leading. If a speed number is the thing you are buying on, neither of these two is the category winner anyway. ExpressVPN and Mullvad take that.

The security read. This is a judgement, not a test result, and it goes against the product I pay for. It is also not a claim that Surfshark is unaudited: Deloitte verified its no-logs policy in 2023 and again in 2025 under the ISAE 3000 assurance standard, and Cure53 audited the infrastructure in 2025. Both are credible. If I could only keep one on the strength of its security posture in 2026, I would keep Nord.

Where Surfshark wins

Devices, and it is not close. Surfshark sets no cap on simultaneous devices. NordVPN caps at 10. Ten sounds like plenty until you count a household properly: two laptops, three phones, a tablet, a TV app, a games console and a work machine is nine before anyone visits, and one guest with a phone and a laptop puts you over. Below ten devices this is a difference on paper. At the cap, one of these products starts asking you to make decisions and the other doesn't.

Ease of use. I have run Surfshark daily since May 2022 across a laptop, two phones and a TV app, and setup on a new device is a login and one tap. The one snag I hit in four years was that UK services would not load abroad until I picked a UK server from the list myself, which is covered in full in the four-year verdict and takes thirty seconds to fix once you know.

Price tier. Surfshark is positioned in the cheaper tier of the mainstream VPNs and Nord sits above it, which is the reason this comparison gets searched at all. I am not going to put a live gap on it, because both sides of that gap change with whatever campaign is running. The referral schemes, side by side

Both companies publish their refer-a-friend terms, so this is the one part of the comparison where hard numbers exist on both sides.

Surfshark Refer & Earn pays up to 3 free months to both parties. The new customer gets 3 months on a 12 or 24-month plan and 1 month on the monthly plan, added once they have stayed subscribed for 31 days. The referrer can take a cash commission instead, up to roughly $38 via PayPal.

NordVPN's refer-a-friend pays the referrer 3 free months per qualified referral with no cap, and the new customer 3 months on a 1-year or 2-year plan or 1 month on the monthly plan. Two conditions carry real risk of a nil payout. The purchase has to be made on nordvpn.com, because App Store and Play Store purchases are excluded. And if the new customer takes a refund inside 30 days, both parties' rewards are cancelled.

The headline is the same on both, then: three months each. The difference is what can void it. Nord states the app-store exclusion explicitly, so if you plan to buy either product through a phone's app store rather than the provider's website, read that provider's referral terms before you tap anything. Are Surfshark and NordVPN the same company?

They share one. Surfshark joined Nord Security in 2022, and NordVPN is a Nord Security company too, so the two products have the same parent. They are not the same product: separate infrastructure, separate apps, separate pricing and separate audits. The practical consequence is that running both does not give you two independent providers, so if independence is what you are buying, Mullvad and IVPN are the usual alternatives.

As market positioning, yes: Surfshark sits in the cheaper tier of the mainstream VPNs and NordVPN above it. I am not quoting the size of the gap, because both run near-permanent discount campaigns and any figure printed here would be wrong within weeks. What I can date is what I paid: £60 for two years of Nord in May 2018, and £48.28 for 27 months of Surfshark in August 2025. Those are seven years apart and are not a like-for-like comparison.

Should I switch from NordVPN to Surfshark?

Only for a reason on this page. If you are over Nord's 10-device cap, or you want the same category of product for less money, that is a real reason. If you are happy on Nord and you value speed or the bigger network, switching to its own corporate sibling gains you very little, and you would be giving up the thing Nord is better at. A VPN you already have set up on every device has a switching cost that a few pounds a year does not always cover.

Can I run Surfshark and NordVPN as backups for each other?

You can run both, but it is not the insurance it looks like. A company-level problem, a policy change or a jurisdiction change hits both, because Nord Security owns both. Two providers under one parent is redundancy of infrastructure only. If you want a genuine second opinion, pick a provider with a different owner.

Which referral scheme pays more, Surfshark or NordVPN?

The headline reward is the same: 3 free months each on the longer plans, 1 month for the new customer on a monthly plan. The differences are in what voids it. Nord cancels both parties' rewards if the new customer refunds within 30 days and excludes App Store and Play Store purchases; Surfshark pays out once the new customer has been subscribed for 31 days, and lets the referrer take a cash commission of up to about $38 instead of months.
