How much does Surfshark cost in the UK, and how to get it cheapest

Short answer: Surfshark Starter costs £1.79 a month in the UK, billed as £48.33 up front for a 27-month term, which is £58.00 once 20% VAT is added at checkout. The 12-month plan is £2.49 a month and the 1-month plan £11.99. I read every one of those off surfshark.com from a UK connection on 26 August 2026, and they are campaign prices that move, which is why each figure on this page carries the date it was read. The number Surfshark doesn't put on the pricing page is the one that decides what it really costs you: the first renewal is £69.50 for twelve months, more than the entire 27-month term before it. I've paid for Surfshark since May 2022, on the Starter plan, so this is the breakdown I'd give a friend.

Every Surfshark price in the UK, read on 26 August 2026

Surfshark sells the same VPN on three commitment lengths, and length is the price lever. The feature set is identical across all three (unlimited devices, 4,500+ servers, the audited no-logs policy); only the per-month price and the lock-in change.

These are Surfshark Starter, the VPN-only tier and the one I pay for, read off surfshark.com/pricing (opens in new tab) from a UK connection on 26 August 2026:

Two things that table does that a headline per-month figure doesn't.

The per-month price is the total divided by the months including the free ones. Surfshark's 24-month plan is sold as 27 months, because the campaign adds three, so £48.33 across 27 months is £1.79. Across the 24 months you actually committed to it is £2.01, which is what the same pricing data gives once the bonus months are stripped out. The 12-month plan works the same way: £2.49 across 15 months, £3.11 across 12.

Every price Surfshark advertises is before tax. Surfshark's terms of service (opens in new tab), section 4, says its fees "are exclusive of taxes" and that it may add VAT at the time of purchase. The visible page says only "VAT may apply"; the data it is built from puts the UK rate at 20%, so the £48.33 headline is £58.00 leaving your account. That fifth is the difference between the number you were quoted and the number on your statement.

What the three tiers cost on the 24-month plan

Starter is the VPN plus Alternative ID. One adds Antivirus, Alert and Search. One+ adds Incogni, the data-broker removal service. Same page, same day:

Starter and One carry the same price on the 24-month term: £48.33 for 27 months either way. On that term the antivirus, breach alerts and private search cost nothing extra, and the only thing picking Starter buys is a renewal £17.60 a year cheaper. That's desk arithmetic off Surfshark's published prices, not a recommendation from use. I hold Starter and have never run One or One+.

Why almost nobody pays Surfshark's list price

On 26 August 2026 the pricing page carried a "Hurry up! Grab our deal here" banner and a Save 85% flag on Starter's 24-month plan. That 85% is measured against paying £11.99 a month for 27 months, which is £323.73. It is not measured against the renewal rate, which is the comparison that would actually tell you something.

I can put a number on how limited the limited time is. On 1 August 2025 I paid £48.28 for a 27-month Starter term. Thirteen months later the same term lists at £48.33. Five pence apart, and both work out at £1.79 a month.

Two things follow. There is no urgency, whatever the banner says. And there is no code to hunt for: the campaign discount applies automatically at checkout, so surfshark.com (opens in new tab) is the only source you need for today's rate.

The two levers that actually get Surfshark cheapest

There are only two real ways to lower what you pay, and the good news is they stack rather than compete:

Lever 1: pick the longest term you're comfortable committing to. The 24-month plan is where the deepest campaign discount and the largest referral reward both land. At £1.79 a month against £11.99, it is 6.7 times cheaper per month than the 1-month plan. If a two-year commitment feels like too much, the 12-month plan at £2.49 is the middle ground.

Lever 2: sign up through a refer-a-friend link. This is the part most price guides miss. Surfshark's Refer & Earn scheme gives the new customer free subscription months on top of whatever campaign discount is already applied:

• 1-month plan: 1 free month
• 12-month plan: 3 free months
• 24-month plan: 3 free months

Those free months are added to your account after you've stayed subscribed for 31 days (the qualifying period). Keep them separate in your head from the three free months already inside the price table above: those are Surfshark's own campaign bonus, shown to any visitor with no link involved, and they're the reason a 24-month plan is billed as 27 months. The referral months are a second mechanism, carried by the link and settled after the 31 days. You are not choosing between the campaign discount and the referral.

The renewal price is the real cost trap

Here's the part Surfshark (like every VPN) is quietest about, and the single most important thing to understand before you buy: the low introductory rate applies to your first term only. The pricing page doesn't show you the renewal price: the figure sits in the data the page is built from, never on the tile you're reading. From the same 26 August 2026 reading, on Starter, both columns including VAT:

You renew at 2.7 times the rate you signed up at, and one renewal year costs more than the whole 27 months before it. That is the number to plan around, not the £1.79.

This is industry-wide (NordVPN, ExpressVPN, PIA and CyberGhost all do it), not a Surfshark-specific trick, but it's where people quietly overpay. The way to stay cheap:

• Set a calendar reminder a few weeks before your term ends.
• When it comes up, either switch to a fresh discounted plan, renegotiate, or move on. Do not let it silently roll over at £69.50.
• Don't rely on the money-back guarantee to escape a renewal. Surfshark's 30-day money-back guarantee applies to your initial sign-up, not to an auto-renewal. After renewal it's a different situation.

I've been a customer since May 2022, and my term runs to roughly November 2027, so this is the one bit of admin the plan genuinely requires: treat the renewal date as the real decision point, not the sign-up.

Ignore "Surfshark coupon code" and "voucher" sites

Search "Surfshark discount code" and you'll find a wall of coupon sites promising an exclusive percentage off. Be sceptical. The reality:

• Referral Plug does not issue a Surfshark coupon code, and neither, in reality, do most of the sites claiming to. The campaign discount you'd get from a "coupon" is the same one Surfshark already applies automatically at checkout.
• The only two levers that genuinely change your price are the ones above: term length and the referral free months. Everything else is either the standard campaign discount repackaged, or a dead link.
• If a code isn't needed to unlock Surfshark's own sale (it isn't), a site pushing "enter this exclusive code" is usually just chasing the affiliate click.

The refer-a-friend link is the one thing that adds value a plain visit to surfshark.com doesn't: the extra free months. That's why it's the route I'd actually recommend.

So what's the cheapest way to buy Surfshark in the UK?

Putting it together, at the 26 August 2026 prices:

1. Choose the 24-month Starter plan at £1.79 a month, £48.33 up front for 27 months, £58.00 with VAT (12-month at £2.49 if two years is too long a commitment).
2. Sign up through a refer-a-friend link so you also collect up to 3 free months.
3. Let Surfshark's campaign discount apply automatically at checkout; don't waste time hunting for a coupon code.
4. Diarise the renewal date, because the year after your term is £69.50.
