giffgaff refer a friend: what the referrer actually gets paid

Affiliate disclosure: this post contains a giffgaff referral link. If you use it, you get £5 in account credit, doubled to £10 for SIMs activated between 1 and 31 August 2026. I also receive credit. It doesn't change the price you pay.

Almost everything written about giffgaff's refer-a-friend scheme is written for the person joining. This post is for the member doing the referring, because giffgaff runs two different reward schemes under one name, and the switch between them happens automatically at your fifteenth recruit.

Before that line you are paid on activation. After it you are paid on something your friend has to do twice.

The standard reward: £5 on activation

giffgaff's promotion terms (opens in new tab) call the baseline "the standard amount of £5 Payback" to the member, matched by "the standard amount of £5 credit" to the friend. The friend has to activate an eligible SIM with a goodybag of at least £8, so the cheapest £6/2GB tier doesn't trigger it.

For SIMs activated between 1 and 31 August 2026 giffgaff adds a further £5 to each side under its Double Reward promotion, making £10. Two conditions sit on that: it is open for up to 15 friends, and giffgaff's refer-a-friend page (opens in new tab) says it "Excludes Super Recruiters". Hold onto both numbers.

Payback is not cash in your account. It is a balance you convert, and giffgaff pays it every six months rather than on demand, on a cycle that runs in June and December. When it lands you can keep it as account credit or donate it to charity. Cash via PayPal is the third option and the only one with a floor: it needs 1,000 Payback points, a point is a penny, so a single £5 referral is half the balance the cash option asks for. Refer someone in July and you are waiting until December.

I've been a member since 2011, and the credit has landed for the friends I've referred over the years. The wait is the part people forget, not the amount.

What happens at 15

giffgaff's help centre is unambiguous about the threshold: "You'll automatically become a Super Recruiter when you recruit 15 new members to giffgaff in your lifetime." There is no application and no opt-out.

Three things about that number are worth putting side by side:

• The August 2026 promotion caps at 15 joiners.
• 15 lifetime activations enrols you as a Super Recruiter.
• The August 2026 promotion excludes Super Recruiters.

If those 15 August joiners are your first fifteen ever, the promotion runs out and the programme change lands on the same friend. And the members most likely to be recruiting fifteen people in a month are the ones the doubled rate does not apply to in the first place.

The exclusion travels down the link, which is the part worth telling your friend. giffgaff's promotion terms say "any new Joiners that join via a Super Recruiter and Super Recruiters themselves, will not be eligible", so in August 2026 a Super Recruiter's link pays the person joining £5 rather than £10.

The Super Recruiter tiers, and what they cost you

giffgaff's own framing on the Super Recruiter page (opens in new tab) is that you are "rewarded up to £22 per recruit instead of £5". That is true, and it is not the whole trade.

Read the two middle columns rather than the last one. Nothing on this table pays on activation. The money is attached to your recruit's second and third spend, and to qualify they must "top up and use a minimum of £10 credit, or purchase a plan with a minimum value of £10", within 120 days of activating.

So the £5 you used to get for a friend who ordered a SIM, activated it and then drifted off is now £0. To reach the Apprentice £10 that friend has to come back and spend at least £10, twice, inside four months. The ceiling went up; the floor went away.

The level is not a lifetime rank either. giffgaff calculates it from "the average number of recruits", and "this is calculated over the previous 3 months", so a Super Recruiter who stops recruiting is an Apprentice by the following quarter, paid £10 per recruit rather than £20.

One thing does improve: Super Recruiter rewards are paid monthly, "around the middle of the month", instead of the six-month Payback cycle. Whatever you earn, you wait weeks for it rather than months.

Is it worth referring people at all?

Yes, if you would have recommended giffgaff anyway, and no if you are treating it as a side income.

The standard £5 is the honest number for almost every member, because almost nobody refers fifteen people. It costs you nothing, it pays on an event you can see happen (your friend activates), and during August 2026 it is £10. That is a good return on sending a link to someone who was going to switch networks regardless.

What it is not is a scheme that scales. The tier that pays £20 and £22 per recruit needs 15 and 120 recruits respectively as a rolling three-month average, and it pays only when each of those recruits spends £10 twice more. Getting to Master means introducing 120 people to a mobile network every quarter. The £22 headline is real and it is for a job, not a favour.

How to share your giffgaff referral link

Your link lives in the giffgaff app and on the refer-a-friend page (opens in new tab) when you are signed in. It takes the form giffgaff.com/orders/affiliate/ followed by your member name, which is why the "codes" other sites publish are usually just somebody's username. Mine is mariaplace.

giffgaff supports two ways to spread it. You can "Send a link on any social or messaging app", which is the version everyone uses, or you can order physical SIM packs to hand out, which carry your attribution in the same way. The SIM packs matter if you refer people offline, because there is no way to add your name to an order somebody else has already placed.

That last point is the one to tell your friend before they order rather than after: giffgaff attaches the referral at the order step, not at activation. A SIM ordered directly from giffgaff.com counts as unreferred, permanently, and neither of you can fix it afterwards.

How much does giffgaff pay you for referring a friend?

£5 in Payback per friend who activates an eligible SIM, doubled to £10 for SIMs activated between 1 and 31 August 2026, capped at 15 friends during that promotion and excluding Super Recruiters. Your friend gets the same amount as account credit.

When is giffgaff Payback paid out?

Every six months, on a cycle running in June and December, not when the referral completes. You can then keep the balance as account credit or donate it; taking it as cash via PayPal needs 1,000 Payback points, which is £10, so one standard £5 referral doesn't reach it on its own. Super Recruiter rewards are the exception: those are paid monthly, around the middle of the month.

How many referrals do you need to become a giffgaff Super Recruiter?

15, over your lifetime as a member. giffgaff enrols you automatically at that point, with no application. Your level within the programme is then recalculated from your average recruits over the previous three months, so it can go down as well as up.

Do Super Recruiters earn more per referral?

More at the top, less at the bottom. Apprentice level pays £5 at the recruit's second spend and £5 at their third, £10 in total, against the flat £5 the standard scheme pays on activation alone. But a recruit who never makes a second qualifying spend of £10 within 120 days pays a Super Recruiter nothing, where the standard scheme would have paid £5 for the activation.

Is there a limit on giffgaff referrals?

Not on the standard £5 scheme, which is uncapped. The August 2026 doubled rate is capped at 15 joiners per member. Super Recruiters are excluded from that promotion entirely.

Can I refer someone who has been with giffgaff before?

No. The reward is for new members, so an existing or returning account doesn't qualify, and the credit isn't recoverable afterwards. If your friend already has a giffgaff account, there is nothing to refer.
