One VPN-specific caveat: Proton VPN Plus and Proton Unlimited are excluded from Proton's 14-day free trial, so a friend who specifically wants the paid VPN subscribes directly. Both sides still get the reward. Rewards are denominated in USD and converted for GBP billing.

My experience: three years on Proton Mail's free tier
I have used Proton Mail as my day-to-day inbox since July 2023 and have never paid Proton a penny. Does the free storage run out? I signed up in July 2023, and in September 2026 my inbox used 0.04 GB of the free 0.5 GB. That is 8% in three years and two months. Carried forward, the free allowance lasts decades rather than months, and I have never claimed the free doubling to 1 GB that Proton offers for completing its Get Started checklist (opens in new tab), because 0.5 GB has not come close to running out. The arithmetic on that, and the three free-plan limits that are not storage, are in is the Proton free plan enough?.
The free VPN tier, honestly: it routes through ten countries and you cannot choose which one is active. For public Wi-Fi that is enough. If you need to pick a country, that is a paid feature.
How I actually use it: alongside Gmail rather than instead of it, moving accounts across to the Proton address a few at a time. What keeps me there is a plain inbox with no ads in it.
What I have not tested: Proton VPN Plus, the paid storage tiers, and Pass on a paid plan. Anything about those in this guide comes from Proton's own documentation and public terms.

Proton suits people who want privacy-first email and storage, anyone trying to move off ad-funded free services, and travellers who want an encrypted account plus a VPN under one roof. If your only need is a fast, feature-rich VPN, a dedicated VPN will offer more; Proton's strength is the integrated, encrypted suite.
