Monzo mystery reward: the odds behind the £10, £20 or £50
TL;DR
Monzo's referral pays a randomised £10, £20 or £50. The published odds, what they average to, why the tiers dropped in 2026, and when a link pays a flat £5 instead.
If you just need the link, you can get your Monzo refer a friend link here.
The Monzo mystery reward is a one-off cash bonus of £10, £20 or £50 paid to new customers who join Monzo through a referral link and make a card payment within 30 days. It's called a "mystery" reward because the amount is randomised, and Monzo publishes the odds: 94% for £10, 5% for £20 and 1% for £50. Both sides get the same draw. That averages £10.90, so treat the offer as £10 with a long tail, not as £50.
What the mystery reward pays
These are Monzo's published odds, from version 4.0 of its personal referral scheme terms, dated 13 August 2026:
| Reward | Probability |
|---|---|
| £10 | 94% of customers |
| £20 | 5% of customers |
| £50 | 1% of customers |
In my experience referring friends across several versions of this scheme, the reward has landed on the lowest tier every time, which is what a 94% floor predicts. The top tier is real but it's a 1-in-100 outcome, and treating it as the expected result was always the mistake the framing invited.
The one thing you can't do is check before you commit. A link on the random reward opens on a page headed "Accept your invite, and discover your reward" and names no figure, so the terms are the only place the number is written down in advance.
The tiers dropped in 2026
This page used to publish £20, £50 and £100 on the same 94/5/1 split, and that was right at the time. Monzo originally ran the mystery reward in a separate document, the Referral Variable Reward Scheme, which started paying on 30 September 2025. On 13 August 2026 Monzo rewrote the main personal terms and folded the reward table into them, one tier lower at every step.
Monzo also still hosts several lettered variants of the variable reward document, each with a different table: one pays £20, £50 and £100, another £5, £10 and £20, another £10, £20 and £100. They aren't dated as superseded and Monzo doesn't say which link falls under which. The figures on this page are the ones in the main scheme terms, which is the document the referral itself is governed by.
When a link pays £5 instead
Two clauses take a link off the random reward and onto a flat £5 for both sides:
- The referrer has already made 100 referrals. Every referral after that pays £5.
- The referrer holds a Monzo Business account alongside their current account. Their personal-scheme referrals pay £5, and only count at all once they've used up their separate business-scheme allowance of three a month.
A link on either clause tells you so up front: its landing page is headed with the figure ("You're invited to join Monzo, and get £5!") instead of the amountless invite. That's the quickest way to tell which offer a link you've been sent actually carries.
What a Monzo referral is worth
£10, £20 or £50 to the new customer and the same to the referrer, paid into the Monzo account within days of the qualifying card payment. Nothing else about the scheme has moved:
- Someone who already has Monzo shares their referral link with you.
- You open a Monzo account by following that link.
- You make a card payment of any amount within 30 days of opening the account.
- Monzo deposits the reward into your account, and the same amount into the referrer's.
There's still no code to type. The referral link handles all the tracking automatically, as long as you start the sign-up from the link rather than from the app store.
Eligibility requirements
To qualify you need to meet all of the following:
- Be a new Monzo customer. If you've previously held a Monzo account (even if closed), you typically won't qualify.
- Sign up using a referral link. Creating an account directly from the Monzo website or app store without following a referral link means no reward.
- Open a full current account. The referral reward applies to the Monzo personal current account, not Monzo Business or other products.
- Make a card payment within 30 days. Any amount qualifies (a £1 transaction is enough). The payment must be a card payment (contactless, chip and pin, or online purchase), not a bank transfer or Direct Debit.
- Be a UK resident aged 16 or over.
The 30-day window starts from the date your account is fully opened, not the date you started the application.
Common mistakes that prevent the reward
Nearly every failed referral comes down to one of these:
- Starting sign-up before tapping the referral link. If you download the Monzo app and begin creating an account before following the link, the referral may not track.
- Not making a card payment within 30 days. Opening the account isn't enough; you need to actually use the card.
- Paying by transfer or Direct Debit. It must be a card payment: contactless, chip and pin, or online.
- Using a different phone number or email. If you start the sign-up on the referral link using one phone number but complete the application with a different one, the tracking can break. Use the same contact details throughout.
- Having a previous Monzo account, even briefly, even if closed years ago. Monzo's referral programme is for genuinely new customers.
Monzo referral not working? How to fix it takes each cause in turn, says whether it can still be rescued, and gives the in-app route to support.
When does the reward arrive?
The cash typically arrives within 2–5 working days of your qualifying card payment. It appears as a deposit in your Monzo account with a description that makes it clear it's the referral reward.
If it hasn't arrived after 7 working days and you've confirmed that you made a card payment within the 30-day window, contact Monzo's in-app support. Occasionally there are delays, but missing rewards are rare if the eligibility steps were followed correctly.
Is the reward taxable?
For most personal customers, referral bonuses like this are not considered taxable income. HMRC generally treats bank sign-up bonuses and referral rewards as incentives rather than earnings.
However, if you receive a high volume of referral rewards (because you're actively promoting Monzo as a business activity), the tax treatment could be different. This is not tax advice. Check with HMRC or a qualified adviser if you're unsure about your specific circumstances.
How does Monzo's reward compare?
Monzo's advantage is access rather than size. At a £10.90 average it pays less than most schemes we track, but anyone can use a Monzo referral link, where every larger scheme is gated behind an invitation, a business account, or a credit check.
| Brand | Sign-up offer | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Monzo | £10, £20 or £50 (random; £10 at 94%) | Referral link + card payment within 30 days |
| Chase | £50 (invitation-only) | Single-use code from an invited customer + £1,000 deposited within 30 days |
| Starling | £25 (new scheme, in trial) | Referral code (typed in app) + reward conditions set per promotion |
| Tide (business) | £100 account credit | Referral code + £500 card spend within 90 days |
| Amex (BA Classic) | 15,000 Avios | Referral link + £2,000 spend in 3 months |
| Barclays | £50 (both sides) | Code emailed to selected customers only + £1,500 paid in and 3 card payments within 30 days |
| Lloyds | £30 (both sides) | In-app link that expires after 14 days + no existing Lloyds product of any kind |
| Other high-street banks | Switching bonuses only, typically £100 to £200 when live | Full CASS switch required |
Chase pays £50 a side but invites only selected customers, and its codes are single-use, so you can't pick one up from a website. Starling only began trialling a £25 scheme in June 2026, and its guaranteed £25 beats Monzo's average, but it only issues codes to customers it invites. Barclays and Lloyds both started paying referral bonuses in 2026, but neither hands out a code any website can give you, and the high-street switching bonuses all require CASS, the guaranteed switch service that moves your payments and closes your old account. We've compared every tested scheme in our best UK bank referral bonuses roundup.
Monzo referral reward FAQs
Can I still get the Monzo mystery reward?
Yes. It runs on any referral link whose referrer hasn't made 100 referrals and doesn't hold a Monzo Business account. The tiers are £10, £20 and £50, one lower at each step than the £20, £50 and £100 the scheme paid before August 2026.
What is the Monzo sign up bonus?
The Monzo sign up bonus is another name for the referral reward: a random £10, £20 or £50 in cash. It's only available when you join via a referral link, not when signing up directly.
Can I refer a friend on Monzo?
Yes. Open the Monzo app, tap your profile icon, and look for the "Refer a friend" or "Get rewarded" section. Monzo generates a unique referral link you can share. When your friend joins and makes a card payment within 30 days, you both receive the same randomised reward.
How many friends can I refer to Monzo?
You can refer up to 100 people at the random reward. Every referral after that pays a flat £5 to each side.
Does the minimum card payment amount matter?
No. Any card payment of any amount qualifies. A £1 contactless tap is enough.
Can I get the reward if I already have Monzo?
No. The referral reward is for new Monzo customers only. If you've previously held a Monzo account, you won't qualify even if the account was closed.
Do I need to keep my Monzo account open after getting the reward?
No. Once the reward is deposited, there's no requirement to maintain the account.
Worth using a referral link?
Yes, though for a smaller reason than a year ago. Using a Monzo referral code is worth £10.90 on average, the sign-up process is identical whether you use one or not, and there is no downside to it: the only difference is that you get paid. What has gone, with the tiers dropping in August 2026, is much reason to choose Monzo for the referral. Pick the account on the account, and take the draw on the way in.
