Monzo referral not working? How to fix it

TL;DR — key takeaways

If your Monzo referral reward hasn't arrived, here are the most common reasons — and what you can do about each one.

If you just need the link, you can get your Monzo referral code here.

You signed up using a Monzo referral link, made a card payment, and the mystery reward hasn't appeared. This guide covers every known reason a Monzo referral fails to track — and what you can do about it.

The quick checklist

Before going through each issue in detail, check these first:

  1. Did you click the referral link before downloading the app or starting sign-up?
  2. Did you make a card payment (not a bank transfer or direct debit) within 30 days?
  3. Have you never had a Monzo account before — even a closed one?
  4. Did you open a personal current account (not a joint account)?
  5. Has it been at least 5 working days since your qualifying payment?

If any of those are "no" or "not sure", the section below will explain exactly what went wrong.

This is the most common reason. The referral link must be clicked before you start the sign-up process. If you:

  • Downloaded the Monzo app first, then clicked a referral link afterwards
  • Started creating an account, then went back and clicked a link
  • Entered your details on the Monzo website before following the referral link

...the referral may not have tracked. Monzo ties the referral to the moment you click the link and enter your phone number. If you'd already begun sign-up, the system may not recognise the link.

Can you fix it? Unfortunately, probably not. Once the account is created without referral tracking, there's no way to retrospectively apply a referral link. You can try contacting Monzo support through the in-app chat, but this is rarely overturned.

How to avoid it: Always click the referral link first, then follow the prompts from there.

2. You missed the 30-day payment deadline

You have 30 days from clicking the referral link to:

  • Download the Monzo app
  • Complete sign-up and identity verification
  • Add funds to your account
  • Make at least one qualifying card payment

If any of these steps happen after the 30-day window closes, neither you nor the referrer receives the reward.

Can you fix it? No. The 30-day deadline is strict and automated. Monzo support cannot extend it.

How to avoid it: Make a card payment as soon as your account is open. Even a £1 contactless tap at a shop counts. Don't wait for the physical card — use Apple Pay or Google Pay with your virtual Monzo card.

3. You used a non-qualifying payment type

Not every transaction counts. Here's what does and doesn't qualify:

Qualifying payments:

  • Contactless (tap to pay)
  • Chip and PIN
  • Online card purchases
  • Apple Pay or Google Pay linked to your Monzo card

Non-qualifying payments:

  • Bank transfers (including Monzo-to-Monzo)
  • Direct debits
  • Standing orders
  • ATM cash withdrawals
  • Adding money to your Monzo account

The payment must be a card transaction — you're spending money using your Monzo debit card, not just moving money around.

Can you fix it? Yes — if you're still within the 30-day window, just make a qualifying card payment. Any amount works.

4. You've had a Monzo account before

Monzo's referral scheme is for new customers only. You're ineligible if you:

  • Previously held a Monzo personal account (even if you closed it years ago)
  • Started the Monzo sign-up process before but didn't finish
  • Had a Monzo prepaid card during the beta period (2016–2017)

This is checked automatically during sign-up. If Monzo's system recognises your identity from a previous account, the referral won't apply.

Can you fix it? No. There is no way around this requirement.

5. You opened a joint account

The referral reward only applies to individual personal current accounts. If you signed up for a Monzo joint account, the referral won't track — even if you clicked the link correctly and made a qualifying payment.

Can you fix it? If you also have (or open) an individual personal account, you may be able to claim through that instead — but only if you haven't already been through the sign-up process. Contact Monzo support to check.

6. You used a different phone number

The referral link is tied to the phone number you enter when you first click it. If you clicked the link on one phone number but completed sign-up with a different number, the tracking chain breaks.

Can you fix it? Contact Monzo support and explain the situation. They may be able to manually verify the referral, but this isn't guaranteed.

7. The referrer has hit their limit

Each Monzo user can refer up to 100 people at the full mystery reward rate. After 100 referrals, the reward drops to £5 for both parties. If the referrer's link has reached its cap, you may receive a reduced reward or none at all.

Can you fix it? Use a different referral link. You can find one on our Monzo referral page.

8. It just hasn't arrived yet

The mystery reward typically lands within 2–5 working days of your qualifying payment. If it's been less than a week, it may simply be processing.

Give it 7 full working days before contacting support. Weekends and bank holidays don't count.

How to contact Monzo support

If you've checked everything above and believe you should have received the reward:

  1. Open the Monzo app
  2. Tap Help in the bottom navigation
  3. Search for "referral" or "mystery reward"
  4. Choose Contact us to start a chat with support

Be ready to provide:

  • The date you clicked the referral link
  • The date you made your first card payment
  • Whether you've ever had a Monzo account before

In-app chat is Monzo's primary support channel. Response times are usually under 10 minutes, though busy periods can be longer.
